About Our Scholarship

In April 2012, Region III lost a dedicated safety professional who served the Region tirelessly in the interests of furthering VPP. Larry Shaffer worked for International Paper participating in many audits as a SGE and mentoring countless sites. Larry was a past SGE and Mentor of the Year and was the first SGE ever to participate on VPP evaluations in Europe.  Larry also served on the Region III Board of Directors for many years.

The Board of Directors voted unanimously to create a memorial scholarship in Larry’s name as a way to honor Larry and his many contributions through the years to Region III and VPP.

The Region III VPPPA Scholarship Committee will select and award up to two (2) $500 - $1,000 scholarships for one year of full or part-time study. You may receive an award for more than one year of your study program however; you must reapply and be selected from each year’s applicant pool.

Awards are offered for tuition, books and academic fees for post-secondary education programs. This includes such programs as those offered by accredited vocational-technical schools, and for two- or four- year college or university degree programs. Awards must be utilized in the academic year that they are received.

Who Is Eligible? 

  • Applicants must be an employee of a Region III VPPPA member company, or a spouse, child, step child or grandchild of an employee of a Region III VPPPA member company. The site must be a VPPPA member in good standing to qualify.
  • Students must be pursuing a degree (undergraduate or graduate) either full time or part time.     
  • All applicants must submit a completed application, an official transcript, reference letter from one of the following a high school teacher,  a professor from the institution they are attending or a supervisor at a current job, also a reference letter from the relative working at the VPP site is required.
  • Note: As part of the application, each applicant shall also submit a typed biography of at least 300 words.
  • The applicants must have at least a 2.5 GPA on a scale of 4.0 at the time of application

How Do I Apply? 

Interested applicants must complete the application which can be found below or print out the PDF version and mail it along with a current, complete transcript of grades to the list recipient on the application postmarked no later than January, 31st prior to the annual conference.

Applicants are responsible for gathering and submitting all necessary information. Grade reports are not acceptable; official transcripts only.

Applicants will receive acknowledgment of receipt of their applications.

Applications are evaluated on the information supplied; therefore, answer all questions as completely as possible. Incomplete applications will not be evaluated. All information received is considered confidential and is only reviewed by the Region III Scholarship Committee.

How is the Scholarship Recipient Selected?

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership, participation in school, and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of goals and aspirations, and an outside appraisal. Financial need is not considered.

 Selection of recipients is made by the Region III Scholarship Committee.

All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

Applicants will be notified prior to the Annual Region III Conference where award presentations will be made.

 Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients.

Students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements.

How Are Awards Paid? 

Payments are made payable to the student, either at the annual conference or by mail.
